HOW DOES SOLAR WINDOW FILM WORK?

Let’s get technical about window film:
Solar films, metalized reflective tint, block up to 88% of the solar energy from entering your home or office; thus reducing the load on your A/C system and saving energy. If you buy a solar film with a Shading Coefficient of .18, such as a Dual Reflective 5%, it will conserve up to 12.5 kWh of energy per year per square foot (SF) in Houston, TX. A consumer that buys energy for $.16 per kWh will save an estimated $2.00 per year per SF with an efficient HVAC system and save even more with a less efficient HVAC system.
So what does that mean to you?
Homes & offices with 3,000 square feet of windows with reflective film can save as much as $6,000 per year if they buy and install solar tint. Solar window film can reduce the peak demand on electrical utilities because solar tint conserves energy between the peak energy demand period from 10 AM to 4 PM. Moreover, the lower the overall energy consumption resulting from solar window film decreases the demand for new CO2 producing power facilities, in turn resulting in decreased emissions and a smaller overall carbon footprint.
Reflective tint is the most effective way to conserve energy because it’s cost effective, has a quick payback period and has immediate results in conserving energy: Once installed, solar tint starts saving you money. Solar Control Window Film is a very efficient way to conserve energy, save you money and maintain a comfortable temperature for your home and office.

HOW SOLAR WINDOW TINT IS MADE?

How Reflective Window Film Is Made?
Solar Window film starts as Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) pellets that are melted. PET is used because of its excellent optical clarity and strength. The melted material is then biaxially streched into a polyester sheet, meaning it is stretched in the direction of both its length and width. UV blockers are usually added during this process.
The next phase of construction is to add dyes or metals to the polyester sheeting. The materials chosen will be determined by the desired performance of the film and its application. Dyed films absorb a lot of heat, and therefore are generally used for automotive applications. Metallized films work in the opposite, rejecting most of the heat rather than absorbing it and are most common for residential/commercial films.
Dyeing – The polyester film is coated and then cured in heated ovens. The pigments are impregnated into the polyester by the heat. The color becomes a permanent part of the film and will not wash off.
Metallizing – can be achieved through three processes:
Evaporative Coating – A crucible containing metal is heated until the metal melts and forms a gas cloud. This metal gas is deposited on the film and bonds as soon as it cools. Aluminum is the metal of choice because of its low melting point.
Electron Beam Coating – This method is similar to the evaporative method except that a beam of high-energy electrons is aimed at the source of metal to heat it. This energy causes the metal to vaporize and form a cloud of gas that deposits on the polyester sheet.
Sputtering – An electrically charged gas, such as argon, bombards the metal and frees the molecules. These molecules are deposited onto the film and layered side by side, providing extremely thin and precise coatings. This coating is so tight that the water used during installation cannot evaporate, which causes a hazy look. This hazy look will go away after two to three weeks of curing.
Next, a scratch-resistant coating is applied to the side that will face the interior of the home. This coating acts as a protective barrier against dust and debris or for anything that may come into contact with the film. A great scratch-resistant coating is a key element for longevity.
After the scratch-resistant coating phase, the mounting adhesive is applied to the side of the film that will be applied to the window. An aggressive adhesive is also needed to provide longevity and ensure the film does not bubble or peel. Adhesives come in a pressure sensitive (sticky) type for automotive, and a clear dry adhesive that utilizes a gel covering activated by water for residential/commercial films.
Finally, the film is covered with a liner over the adhesive that is peeled away during the installation process. The liner acts as a guard against contamination from dust and debris. Multiple plies may be joined together to provide extra performance and durability.

Choosing the Best Tinting Installation Solution
When tinting, you have to make sure you have a slippery solution between the glass and the window film. There are a few ways of achieving this effect, but which one is going to give you the best tint job for you window?
Dish Washing Liquid
Some tinters swear by mixing a few drops of dish washing liquid soap into a spray bottle full of water, and coating the window with the solution. There are a few drawbacks to this:
- Dish Washing Liquid is made for disintegrating grease, so the harsh chemicals can wear down the glue, and keep the window film from sticking properly.
- Dries fast, often times causing bubbles or streaks in the tint job
Baby Shampoo
An alternative to dish washing liquid is baby shampoo. A lot of the harsh, grease-fighting chemicals in dish washing liquid aren’t found in baby shampoo because of its gentle intended nature. However, baby shampoo still dries very quickly, and if you try to move the film after it dries, it can cause the film to scratch. The last thing you want is a scratched film.
Tint Slime
The best choice for tinting professionals everywhere is Tint Slime! Where the other options are cheaper dollar store options, Tint Slime is a product that is made specifically for window tinting. It is free of harsh chemicals and particulates, so your tint job will last longer. Tint slime makes it easy to slip the tint film when you need it to, and dries when you find the perfect placement.
The choice is clear: for your best tint job, Tint Slime is the best way to make sure you get professional-looking tinted windows every time!

THE HISTORY OF WINDOW TINT
- Posted by Admin
The first instance of window tinting as we know it stems from America around the time of World War II and the years following. One of the more popular tinting manufacturers were EZ Eye factory tint. You could find this tint sometimes on the ’40 Mercury Romango from Detroit, or later, the ’58 Chevy Impala.
If you couldn’t get the windows tinted from the factory, some people took a swing at tinting at home for the first time. However, this is before window film was invented, so they used spray-on tinting. The result was a dark and usually uneven tint, so when window film was invented in 1966, it changed the window-tinting game.
The film started off as “dye-based,” which had poor heat rejection, and would absorb heat into the vehicle, rather than reflect it back. It also had a tendency of turning purple and bubbly in the sun, and didn’t have a very long lifespan.
A second generation of window film emerged in the early nineties. This film was constructed of metal integrated with dye. This “hybrid” film contained dye to absorb heat and metallic particles to reflect the sun’s rays, and therefore heat. It approached 50% heat reduction. The major drawback with metallized films is interference with electronic devices like GPS and sometimes radio.
The newest edition to the window tinting industry is ceramic films. These are the top of the line. They last a lifetime or longer, reject heat and UV rays, and do not interfere with electronics. We have come a long way in the window tinting world, and are only coming up with new and exciting ways to improve upon our product!

THE BENEFITS OF SECURITY WINDOW FILM
- Posted by Admin
Personal Safety
When float glass is broken (normal window glass), it breaks into sharp shards that are dangerous to anyone in the vicinity. This is particularly hazardous if the window is broken by human impact. Toughened (tempered) glass can produce showers of small glass pellets that can cause serious injury; especially in the event of a car crash (because most automotive side glass is tempered). The building codes of some countries specify requirements for personal safety in architectural glass and glazing. Certain films with correct certification can be used to upgrade existing glass and glazing to meet the safety standards specified in the building codes.
Protection of glazing during earthquakes
In many parts of the world, earthquake activity is an ever-present fact of life. Ground motion during seismic activity causes building movement, which in turn causes glass breakage and glass fall-out, endangering people below, and again exposing a building’s contents to weather damage and theft during looting sprees. Safety and security films have proven their worth in protecting people and property during seismic activity, by helping retain window glass in its frame, thus prevent injury by falling glass.
Increased protection from bomb and blast hazards
Explosions cause widespread damage, and in an urban environment (often containing lots of glass), the risk of injury is increased. In the event of an explosion in an urban area, flying glass is often the biggest cause of injury/trauma. However, certain specially designed films, when applied correctly, can contain these shards of glass, protecting the internal environment, and in some cases, retaining the pane of glass in the window frame. People sourcing films for this purpose should choose a product from a manufacturer that can produce results for General Services Administration (GSA) blast ratings, and check with the manufacturer that the installer has sufficient experience and knowledge to offer such products.
Protection from hurricanes and windborne debris
Safety films can be used as an additional protection against flying glass when glazing is broken by windborne debris. By helping to prevent windows from shattering, or retaining shattered glazing in its frame, these films help maintain the “weather seal” of a building. This helps reduce damage from water and high winds. If the seal can be maintained, roofs are less likely to be blown off, and it is more likely that a building can be saved.

ANSWERS TO COMMON MYTHS ABOUT CAR WINDOW TINT FILM
- Posted by Admin
Window tinting can help to reduce radiant heat in car, lower heat and solar damage, make your vehicle more comfortable, and extend the life of your interior. With all of the good that window film can do for your automobile, it may not come as a surprise that there are some myths and rumors about it, too.
Solar Control Film, Inc. is a leading window tint distributor in the U.S., so we’re pretty confident that we can answer and debunk some common myths about window film…
Myth: Eventually – such as after a few years – window film will begin to bubble and discolor (like that purple bubbly stuff on some cars).
Fact: Not true! The film that you see bubbling and eggplant-toned on car windows is, first of all, not quality film. Secondly, it was most certainly not installed by a professional. Window tinting is done with metallized films that do not turn color and stay the same near-clear tone that they are on installation day. Our window films are guaranteed not to discolor. Our professional network of installers are all skilled to an expert level on the installation process to ensure there is no bubbling.
Myth: Window film will make my windows dark.
Fact: While window films come in a variety of tints (the darker they are, the more solar heat they reflect away), most of them are very light and nearly invisible. You can select the best window tinting to fit your needs in protection and tone – your windows won’t be darker unless you want them to be!
Myth: All UV rays and fading is stopped by window tinting.
Fact: Nearly all window films will protect against at least 99.9% of harmful UV rays. However, fading is caused by more than just UV rays. Window tinting will protect your interior from that 99.9% of UV light, which makes up about 40 percent of the causes of fading. The film will also reflect most of the solar heat and visible light (another 50 percent of the causes of fading), but the remaining causes of fading –including chemical vapors, indoor light, cleaning materials, and humidity – cannot be controlled with window tinting.
Myth: Over time, the UV-protection of my window film will lose its effectiveness.
Fact: The films we manufacture for your windows have a proprietary adhesive system that does not lose its effectiveness as time passes. Solar Control Window Films standards have been effective for upwards of 15-20 years, and all of our film installations come with at least a 15-year warranty for interior commercial applications, or lifetime warranty for automobile windows.
Myth: If I have window film on my doors and windows, burglars will be completely unable to break the glass and enter my car.
Fact: While window tinting, safety films and security films do deter glass from breaking in a burglary attempt, they cannot completely stop a burglar from breaking the glass and entering your vehicle. It will require considerably more effort and materials for them to gain entrance, but it is still possible.
