Most window film products are largely used to keep homes and vehicles cooler inside. However, over the past few years, various forms of technology have been incorporated into this essential product, enabling it to be used for far more than just keeping the sun at bay on a few building or vehicle windows.

Smart Windows

Sometimes also referred to as electro-chromatic technology, smart glass windows enable glass to be changed from clear to fully opaque by means of an electrical current. This works by using a combination of electro-chromatic, suspended particle and liquid-crystal technologies. This switchable glass can be operated manually to obtain privacy virtually instantly or it can be connected into a building’s management system and adjust constantly to ensure that occupants are comfortable at all times.

Photovoltaic (PV) Technology

This form of window technology is able to convert daylight into electricity in much the same way as solar panels, which makes it possible to convert a building’s glass surfaces into power-generating panels. Although the initial installation of this could be deemed as costly, being able to generate this much electricity will equate into a tremendous saving within a very short period of time, rendering it one of the most energy-efficient systems around.

Photochromic Glass

Photochromic window technology works by allowing glass to darken when it is exposed to sunlight and as a result, it can be seen in building windows and many pairs of spectacles these days as well. While this product offers some great benefits, there are still a few issues that need to be addressed with regards to the limits in the transition or switch function. While this form of technology is great for keeping sunlight out of a property, it can make a room colder, which means that HVAC systems could end up working harder to keep building occupants comfortable.

Intelligent Vehicle Glass

Recently, Continental announced that it had developed a technology that is able to tint vehicle windows with just the touch of a button. Known as Intelligent Glass Control, it works by running electric current through specially formulated windshields, side windows and rear windows of vehicles. However, at this stage, the technology has only been proven to be feasible in higher-end vehicles because it is quite costly. When a charge is applied to windows, the particles embedded in them “systematically align themselves in parallel,” making the window clear. When the charge is removed, the particles rearrange again, causing windows to darken and be transparent from the inside out.

If the above mentioned window tint technologies are anything to go by, this market looks set to release even more advanced option in years to come. When having any of these items installed, it is crucial to ensure that the work is done by experienced and accredited installers. This will not only ensure that the product warranty remains in place; it will enable them to be used for many years to come. Contact us to find out more about building or vehicle tinting.
